As far as I can remember right now, I haven’t heard any explanations for the German titles. He went to a boarding school in Pennsylvania for high school that offered German as a foreign language, so maybe he took German in high school? He stayed with a foreign family while as a boarding school student, but the parents were a Polish-Dutch couple, so no real explanation there. Sorry I can’t offer more help!
